Sustainability Policy for the Ashlyns Festival
The Ashlyns Festival is committed to promoting sustainability and protecting the environment. We recognise that our actions have an impact on the planet, and we strive to minimise our ecological footprint. As such, and in partnership with Transition Town Berkhamsted’s Green Events Team, we have developed a sustainability policy for our annual festival to ensure that we organise and execute the event in an environmentally conscious manner. Our sustainability policy is based on the following principles:
Waste Reduction and Recycling
We aim to reduce waste at the event by providing clearly labelled recycling bins throughout the festival grounds. We encourage attendees to recycle and dispose of waste responsibly. Our event staff will work to minimise the use of disposable products such as plastic cups, plates, and utensils. We encourage the use of reusable items including in particular polycarbonate glasses which we use in preference to glass for safety reasons, which we encourage all guests to refill (or swap for a clean glass) thereby helping to minimise wastage in terms of rubbish and washing up!. We will provide water refill stations for reusable bottles.
Energy Conservation
We will minimise energy consumption by using energy-efficient lighting and sound equipment wherever possible. We will also encourage attendees to use alternative modes of transportation, such as walking, cycling, or carpooling, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transportation.
Sustainable Procurement
Wherever possible, we will source environmentally friendly and sustainable materials for all festival items, including merchandise, food, and beverages. We will prioritise local food options and will work with vendors to ensure that they are using sustainable and ethical practices, including not using single-use plastic.
Education and Outreach
Transition Town Berkhamsted will provide educational materials on sustainable practices, including information on recycling, energy conservation, and sustainable living.
Continuous Improvement
We will review and evaluate our sustainability policy after each festival to identify areas for improvement. We will seek feedback from attendees, staff and students as we seek to continuously reduce the impacts of our festival on the environment.
